Is remote work for everyone?

”Of course not” – my fiancee said. One can say – simple question, simple answer, that as a matter of fact exhaustes the topic, so we can finish at this point. But let me go on and challenge my fiancee’s answer a bit. In this post I will be referring to the previous one ”Remote work pros&cons”, since I realized the points included in it somehow determine whether a person might regard the remote work suitable for him or not. It may also happen that someone is so enthusiastic about taking a remote job that he doesn’t even realize any disadvantages or his personal shortcomings that might not enable him to start this job or – if already started – to continue it for a long period of time.

Freedom vs Slavery

What for one is freedom, is slavery for someone else. If you feel you are no longer (or never were) able to handle working in the office, taking remote job can be a good way of escaping this kind of trap. For someone who is a stay-at-home type of person, or simply doesn’t like working with the accompany of other people, this would be a perfect solution to do what you love and, at the same time, be at the place you love, or at least at the place that doesn’t bring any negative connotation. On the other hand, there are people for whom working at home is the same kind of trap as office for others, because they’re living their whole life in one place, with no accompany except their dog or cat and they are feeling more and more like slaves in their own home.

Distractions

As in the aforementioned post I refer to, there are a lot of them looking around you when you are a homeworker. Really a lot, starting from your most important working device – a computer and its numerous ways of use – ending at dirty windows that finally need to be cleaned. If you are prone to distractions, then working at home is not for you – you need to be twice as focused as you are in the office to do your daily tasks efficiently. Good news is that everybody is prone to distractions – bad news is that not everybody is able to fight them, so you need to figure out which type of person you are.

Self-Motivation

Someone once said, and I completely agree with it, that we as people are lazy creatures and we need constant motivation to take action. But same as it is with focus, while working home you need to be twice as motivated as when working in the office. Why? See above paragraph:) Besides, a good and effective remote worker has to be a self starter that doesn’t need the direct supervision of someone else.

As you’ve noticed I focused on personal inclinations that determine whether you might be a type of remote worker or not. However, going a bit deeper into the topic, there is one other aspect that is worth mentioning.

Cultural aspect

This aspect should be taken into consideration typically when it comes to working with companies based in other countries or especially continents. Different attitudes towards punctuality, tolerance for bureaucracy, varying work ethics and communication styles or a strict obeying of hierarchy can meet with miscomprehension from both cooworking sides, which can lead to impatience or lack of willingness to cooperate. Concluding – if you are not ready to understand someone’s else attiutude towards work and accept it (or at least tolerate), you may not be able to do your job and quickly give up.

Summing up

We can say that my fiancee was right – just like many things in this world, also remote work is not for everyone. Although it may sound tempting to take it, you should first realize your attitude towards working home, your shortcomings and try to answer a couple of questions essential in determining whether you are ready to take this type of job.
