How we compared

We read each vendor's product, pricing and help pages on 8 November 2026 and compared the tools on four questions:

Capture
How much of the workday does it record without a timer?
Timesheet
Does it turn that activity into time entries, or do you?
Privacy
Who sees the raw activity, and what is never collected?
Price
What does a small team pay, and is there a free plan?

Vendors change prices often, so check the linked sources before you buy.

Best overall

1. TimeCamp

The TimeCamp AI desktop app runs in the background and notes the apps, websites, document names and calendar events you work with. At the end of the day it suggests time entries that are already matched to your projects and tasks. Nothing reaches your timesheet until you approve it, and each correction makes the next suggestions better.

It also has the widest free plan in this guide: unlimited users, with the AI time tracker included. Paid plans start at $3.99 per user, the same as Clockify and well below Timely and Toggl.

  • Drafts complete time entries, matched to projects and tasks
  • Free plan with unlimited users

Limits

  • AI suggestions are billed by usage. TimeCamp estimates about $6 per user per month, with $10 of free credits to start
  • The AI app runs on macOS and Windows only
  • Team reports on apps and websites need the Premium plan or higher

Pricing: Free plan. Starter $3.99, Premium $6.99 and Ultimate $9.99 per user per month, billed annually ($5.49, $9.99 and $13.99 billed monthly). AI suggestions are billed by usage.

2. Timely

Timely's Memory apps for Mac, Windows and Chrome record your work in the background. AI drafts the entries and assigns them to projects and clients, and you approve them in one click. Only approved entries are shared with the team, and Timely takes no screenshots and logs no keystrokes.

The catch is price. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, and the Starter plan stops at 5 users. Larger teams pay $16 per user or more.

Strengths

  • Mature AI drafting and project allocation
  • Only approved entries are shared
  • No screenshots or keystroke logging

Limits

  • No free plan, only a 14-day trial
  • Starter is limited to 5 users; Premium allows up to 50

Pricing: Starter $9, Premium $16 and Unlimited $22 per user per month, billed yearly ($11, $20 and $28 billed monthly). 14-day free trial.

Best for freelancers

3. Rize

Rize records the apps, documents, meetings and calendar events you work on, sorts them with AI and builds a timesheet tagged to clients and projects for you to review. It also gives focus insights and reminds you to take breaks.

It is built for individuals first. There is no free plan, client reports start on the Pro plan, and team seats cost $29.99 each with a two-seat minimum.

Strengths

  • Automatic AI categorization of apps and documents
  • Captures calendar meetings even when the call is not the active window
  • Focus insights and smart breaks

Limits

  • No free plan, only a 7-day trial
  • Client reports need Pro ($23.99 per month)
  • macOS and Windows only, no mobile app

Pricing: Basic $9.99, Pro $23.99 and Max $39.99 per month, billed annually (Basic is $12.99 billed monthly). Team $29.99 per seat per month, with at least 2 seats. 7-day free trial.

Best for timer-first teams on a budget

4. Clockify

Clockify's desktop auto tracker records the programs, browser tabs and documents you use. Only you can see this log. It stays on your computer and is deleted after 45 days.

The auto tracker does not add anything to your timesheet: you pick activities and turn them into entries, one by one or in bulk. Clockify runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, but on a Mac the auto tracker needs the version from the Clockify website, not the App Store one.

Strengths

  • Free plan for up to 5 users
  • Paid plans from $3.99 per seat
  • The activity log is private and stored on your computer

Limits

  • No AI drafting: you turn activity into entries by hand
  • The free plan stops at 5 users

Pricing: Free for up to 5 users. Basic $3.99, Standard $5.49, Pro $7.99 and Enterprise $11.99 per seat per month, billed annually ($4.99 to $14.99 billed monthly).

Best timer with automation rules

5. Toggl

Toggl, formerly Toggl Track, is a timer first. Its desktop apps for Windows and macOS track your activity, and automation rules start tracking from keywords, calendar events and web pages you select. It also detects idle time. All of these are on every plan, including Free.

The automation is rule-based, so you set up the keywords, calendars and pages yourself. The free plan covers up to 3 users, and paid plans cost more than most in this guide.

Strengths

  • Polished timer, browser extension and calendar sync
  • Automation on every plan, including Free
  • Idle time detection

Limits

  • Automation needs setup, rule by rule
  • The free plan stops at 3 users
  • Paid plans from $9 per user ($12 billed monthly)

Pricing: Free for up to 3 users. Starter $9 and Premium $16 per user per month, billed annually ($12 and $24 billed monthly). Enterprise on request.

Best for personal focus reports

6. RescueTime

RescueTime runs in the background and tracks time on apps and websites with no input from you. It is strongest at focus and distraction reports. Timesheets that log time by project, client and task come with the Solo+ and Team+ plans.

Activity data is sent to RescueTime's servers to build the reports.

Strengths

  • Fully automatic, with no setup
  • Clear focus and distraction reports
  • Free Lite plan, plus iOS and Android apps

Limits

  • Timesheets need Solo+ ($12 per month) or Team+ ($16 per user)
  • Built for focus more than for billing

Pricing: Free Lite plan. Solo $7 and Solo+ (with timesheets) $12 per month, billed annually. Team $10 and Team+ $16 per user per month, billed annually.

The verdict

If you want time tracking that works without timers, TimeCamp is the strongest choice. It drafts the whole day for you, keeps the raw activity private, and is free to start for a team of any size. Choose Timely if budget is not a concern, Rize if you work alone, and Clockify or Toggl if your team prefers to run timers.

Questions

What is automatic time tracking?

Software that records the apps, documents, websites and meetings you work on in the background, so you do not have to start and stop timers. The better tools then turn that record into time entries for you to approve.

Is automatic time tracking the same as employee monitoring?

Not necessarily. In TimeCamp, Timely and Clockify's auto tracker, only the tracked person sees the raw activity, and only the entries they approve are shared. Check the privacy defaults of any tool before you roll it out.

Which tool is best if I want to pay nothing?

TimeCamp has the only free plan here with the AI time tracker and no user limit, though AI suggestions are billed by usage after $10 of free credits. Clockify (up to 5 users) and Toggl (up to 3 users) are free too, but rely more on timers.
